Prologue

Cape Town, South Africa.

Zander Reid struggled to open his listless eyes but failed as an excruciating pain filled his whole body. He could hear faint voices around him, yet every organ in his body refused to respond to his brain. After being shot, he had no memory, having lost all his senses, and therefore wondered if he was still alive. So, he did not know whether officer Brentwood of SAPS, Cape Town, who was investigating his case, could nab Rafael Moretti and his men. His thoughts immediately went to his wife, Genelia, and he wondered if they had found her. With Rafael Moretti still at large, her life was now at a greater risk than his.

Concern for Genelia forced him to try opening his eyes. He could not afford to die, as he had a mission at hand. He had to save his Genelia. He could hear a woman's voice speaking to him from far away. Was Genelia here? Had she returned to him? His heart filled up with hope and he was now desperate to open his eyes and see what was going on around him.

Brooklyn Davis Ardolf broke down seeing her twin in such a state. Ever since Cameron Miller, his best friend, called her to inform her about her brother's condition, she came down to Cape Town with her husband, Nikolas Ardolf, and her three children. For the last two days, the doctors had been battling to save Zander as they could not find an exit wound for the bullet. The computed tomography scanning showed the bullet stuck in his right trapezius muscle after it ricocheted off the scapula. However, the bullet in his forearm had a linear trajectory, and the projectile's terminal location was apparent.

Immediately surgeries followed, and they extracted the bullets lodged in his body, but there was a comminuted right scapular fracture underlying the ballistic wound and air tracking through the right trapezius muscle. Treatment and therapy followed and Zander stabilized finally while they waited for him to gain consciousness. The doctors announced he would feel tremendous pain, impaired ability to raise the ipsilateral shoulder, and scapular winging on abduction of the arm for the next few months. His postoperative recovery would take a week at most, after which they would release him from the hospital.

"Nikolas, Brandon has gained consciousness. I saw his fingers move," cried Brooklyn, feeling relieved. Although her twin changed his original name to Zander Reid, she still called him Brandon, just like Genelia did. Nikolas rushed out to call the nurse and doctor while Brooklyn tried to revive her twin.

"Brandon, it is me, Brooks. Wake up, please." Her voice was heavy with emotions as she tried hard to control them, unable to see her brother's condition. Zander again tried to move his fingers, but the pain on the right side was unbearable. Finally, he heard someone call his name. It was his twin, Brooklyn's voice. She was crying! For a moment, Zander had an eerie feeling that he might have died and maybe that was the reason Brooklyn was in tears. But suddenly, an excruciating pain shot through from his shoulder to his neck and he gasped and sputtered helplessly. Hearing his own voice, Zander opened his bleary eyes and blinked at the well-lit hospital room where he was lying on life support.

"Thank God you are awake now. I was so worried," sobbed Brooklyn as she came forward to sit at his bedside, holding his hand to comfort him. Zander smiled at her, tightening his hold on her hand.

"I am so glad you are here, Brooks. Where's Nikolas?" Zander was well aware that Nikolas would never leave her alone and would always accompany her to the end of the world if the need arose. Despite so many years of their marriage, he still was crazy about his wife and their love was the forever kind. It always made him upset he could not have such true love in his life. His was an unrequited feeling, and he was doomed forever because of his own stupidity. If only he had taken the opportunities life had given him, Genelia would have been his forever.

"Nikolas has gone to get the doctor. Are you in pain, Brandon?" She noted the dazed look on his face and became restless to get him some relief. Before he could reply, the doctor rushed in with his nurse and they tended to him. The pain medication gave him relief and when officer Brentwood arrived later to talk to him in the evening, he could sit up and talk to him about the case. With Brooklyn gone to tend to her children, Cameron arrived and joined in.

"The man who shot you, Miguel Sorrento, was Carlos's brother. Before he could open his mouth, Moretti's men shot him dead and ever since there is a strife going on between Carlos and Moretti. We have taken advantage of it and confiscated their latest two drug consignments, resulting in huge losses for Moretti. We have arrested twenty of his men on the spot." Zander smiled a little, but the news did not brighten up his spirits at all and he still felt worried about his Genelia.

"That is good progress, officer. I would suggest that we use this opportunity more and tail Carlos while he is grieving the death of his brother. I'm sure he'll lead us to our man," suggested Cameron, and officer Brentwood nodded.

"We have a team dedicatedly doing exactly so for the last two days."

"What about my wife, officer? Have you been able to trace her?" Zander anxiously waited for the officer to give him some news of her whereabouts, but all he did was shake his head.

"Not yet, Mr. Reid, but we will soon. We were so busy here that I have not yet taken any update from the officer investigating your wife's case. However, we are sorry to inform you that your chauffeur, Tony Davison, has breathed his last yesterday after battling with his life. Sorrento had emptied two bullets into his chest." Zander sat shocked, hearing about his faithful man and immediately called Tony's wife and offered her a compensation and a job for his son.

"It is really upsetting to hear about Tony. He has been with me for the last six years."

The officer took leave after promising to update them about Genelia soon. Cameron sat with his best friend for a few more minutes before leaving for work. After he left, Zander fell asleep under the effect of the painkillers.

The doctors transferred him to the rehabilitation unit for ten days and then released him finally. For a month, he could not exert his neck and right shoulder and therefore couldn't go to work. Physiotherapy started, and he started improving day by day. After two months, Brooklyn left with her little family since Mila and Zander's nurse, Greta Smithson, were capable enough.

However, as the month progressed, Zander was more and more restless. The police still did not find Rafael's whereabouts and Carlos seemed to have disappeared altogether. They thought Rafael had him killed as well and the latest developments therefore made Zander lose his peace of mind. He sat staring at his laptop, at the mountain load of emails, wondering why people wrote so many emails instead of using postal service. He could easily have read them a few at a time without straining his trap.

Suddenly, he remembered the letter that Steve, his trusted security guard, had handed to him before the unfortunate incidents started disrupting his peace of mind. He looked around his desk, wondering where he had kept it. Who could have sent him that letter?

His nurse came in to announce that it was time for his physiotherapy and Zander had to leave with her. After the physiotherapist left, she served him his lunch, but his mind was in overdrive thinking of the day when he had received the letter. Where exactly did he stash it away? However, Cameron's phone call disrupted his thoughts, and he groaned out aloud.

"Hey bro, you won't believe what I just found!" he exclaimed while Zander rolled his eyes. Of course, he was sure that whatever Cameron found could not be that exciting or give him any happiness at all.

"What have you found out?" His bored, flat tone was enough to kill anyone's enthusiasm, but not Cameron's.

"Did you check Bianca's social media account?" Zander groaned out aloud, as she was the last person he could think of now.

"No, I'm not interested, Cam." He wanted to disconnect the call if that was why his best friend had bothered him when he had an important task at hand.

"She claims to be pregnant with your child, Zand. Go ahead, check her account!" said Cameron, making Zander's jaws drop with shock. What the hell was he blabbering?

"Is this some kind of stupid joke, Cam?" he growled angrily.

"See for yourself." After he disconnected the call, Zander went to his room to check for himself. For the last three months, he had not been able to use his mobile and laptop for anything other than work. He opened Bianca's account and stared at the two photographs and captions. They left him speechless and horrified!
