Chapter Thirty-Six

Sofia’s words saddened Victoria a lot. She was now desperate to meet Colton and tell him that she forgave him but he still had his phone switched off. The next whole week went by amidst fun and enjoyment. Their old friends and relatives visited them. The house was alive with a continuous flow of visitors the whole day. However, Davion looked worried as Colton hadn’t turned up at the grand event that was held at one of their casinos.

Victoria was sitting in the living room and playing with Celestine while Asher slept in his stroller. Sofia and their mom were staring at their mom’s laptop, selecting wedding dresses when Davion stormed into the room. He had just returned from the two-day event that had just ended. He sat down beside his wife and massaged his temples.

“What happened, Davion?” asked Sofia worriedly.

“Colton didn’t come to the event even today. He was the one who had arranged it and he wasn’t there. This has never happened before. His phone is switched off and I haven’t seen him since the night he left our home in Reno in a rush. I’m very worried, Sofia,” said Davion. Victoria’s face paled at his words. Her heart constricted hearing about Colton. Sofia’s words rang in her ears. Where was Colton? Was he alright? She just hoped that he didn’t do anything untoward. They had to find him!

“We need to find him, Davion. What if he needs help?” she cried hysterically, unable to keep calm anymore. Her mom gaped at her reaction. “I’ll talk to him if that brings him back. I’ll tell him that I’ve forgiven him. Please do something, Davion. He’ll kill himself,” said Victoria as a sob escaped her mouth.

Sofia got up and sat down beside her to calm her. “It’s alright Vicky. Don’t panic. We’ll find him soon,” said Sofia.

“Yeah. I’m calling my manager to track down his bank transactions. We’ll get an idea where he is,” said Davion, getting up to make a phone call.

“I hope he hasn’t done anything. I should have known. I’m responsible for all this,” sobbed Victoria. Their mom gaped at her reaction trying to fathom what this is all about. From the looks of it she was sure that her daughter was in love with Colton Glenn. Then why was she marrying Trevor?

“Can anyone please tell me what’s going on?” she asked her daughters.

“I’ll tell you everything later,” said Sofia as she tried to calm down a broken Victoria.

“You aren’t responsible at all, Vicky. You were hurt and defensive. It’s quite a normal feeling. Colton’s been this way since his mom’s death. He had disappeared for a month and Davion couldn’t connect to him. He returned after a month on his own. That’s the reason we didn’t see him at my wedding. Give him time. He’ll come around,” she coaxed. Victoria wiped her eyes and looked at her twin.

“I can’t relax till I know that he’s safe,” said Victoria.

“Davion is looking for him. Give him some time, “ said Sofia.

The extra few days Victoria was restless and disturbed. So when Trevor came to announce their wedding dates a month later, Victoria just lost her mind. “Asher is just born. How can we get married in a month? You should have consulted me before fixing the date, Trevor,” she said in a displeased tone. Trevor’s face paled and he looked uncomfortable.

“I thought you’d be happy,” he said.

“Of course she’s happy, Trevor. It’s just that her friend’s missing that’s got her so stressed,” informed her mom.

“Friend? Who? The guy who came by a few days back?” asked Trevor with a frown.

Sofia nodded and Trevor frowned more. He was instantly suspicious that there was more to this. Was he the guy Victoria was in love with? Seeing her condition, it was clear that the guy wasn’t just a friend to her.

“I have my clinic in fifteen minutes. I’ll come back later,” he said, deciding to come back when Victoria was in a better frame of mind. He was feeling a little disappointed as he had so much hope that at last his barren life would have a little happiness with Asher around. The last few months that he had spent with Victoria, he had grown attached to Asher and to Victoria as well. Victoria was too upset to give him a thought as she wallowed in grief and guilt. Sofia went to see him off and comfort him seeing his downcast eyes and upset expression.

“Give her some time, Trevor. She’ll recover soon,” she told him. Trevor sighed.

“I’m getting a feeling that there’s more to this than meets the eye,” he said suspiciously. Sofia was dumbfounded by his words. She didn’t know what to tell him anymore. Trevor climbed into his car and sped away.

As he parked his car in his garage, his phone buzzed with an incoming call from his older sister, Teresa. She had been calling him since morning but he had been too busy at the clinic to take her call. “Yes, Terri, tell me. I’m free now,” he said.

“This is so important, Trevor. I’ve been trying to contact you since morning,” said his sister. She was five years older than Trevor and lived in San Francisco with her husband and two daughters. She was a gynecologist at a renowned hospital in San Francisco and was doing quite well for herself.

“Sorry, I was a little busy at the clinic. Tell me,” said Trevor.

“Trev, how soon can you come over to San Francisco?” asked his sister in a stressed voice.

“Why, Terri? Is anything the matter? I hope everything’s all right,” he asked worriedly.

“Just come as quickly as possible,” said his sister, making him more stressed.

“Please tell me Terri. You’re killing me,” he groaned.

“Today I went to a rehab center to check a patient. Guess whom I saw there?” she asked him. Trevor was clueless who she might have seen there.

“Who? I have no idea,” said Trevor.

“I saw Stefanie. She didn’t recognize me,” said his sister in a hoarse and tensed tone. Trevor sat down to support his trembling legs. He just couldn’t believe what he had heard. His head started spinning.

“Stefanie’s alive?” asked Trevor in a hoarse whisper. After her devastating accident, when her car burst out in flames, they had found the charred remains of two women. One of them was identified as Stefanie and the other one was her mom. Ever since, Trevor’s life had been turned upside down. He had been devastated. Now suddenly after eight years, suddenly the news of her being alive was more than he could take in.

“Yes, Trev. I want you to come here as soon as possible. Let’s see if she recognizes you,” said his sister. After disconnecting the call, Trevor rushed to pack his stuff. He also collected Stefanie’s identification proof and their wedding pictures. After two hours he sat on the flight to San Francisco, waiting eagerly to go and see his Stefanie. His heartbeats accelerated and suddenly he felt a little relieved that Victoria wasn’t in love with him. He would have felt guilty for hurting her. If his Stefanie was alive, he was a married man already. He would have to call off his engagement with Victoria.

The next few days, Victoria was glad that Trevor didn’t disturb her. He too had disappeared that night and didn’t even bother to call her or visit her. She didn’t mind since she was too preoccupied with thoughts of Colton. Davion had tried to check his bank transactions but strangely there were no transactions in the last few days. With his mobile phone switched off and no bank transactions, Davion was at his wit’s end. He had no idea how to track the guy. They were all worried for him. Finally it was time for Sofia and Davion to return back to Reno.

“Keep me updated, Sofi. The moment you know about Colton’s whereabouts, please inform me,” she begged.

“Don’t worry. You’ll be the first one to know,” said Sofia.

After they left. Victoria restlessly waited every second for some update on Colton. “If you live him so much, why did you agree to marrying Trevor, Vicky,” asked her mom. Sofia had told her everything before leaving,

“I wish I hadn’t. Now I’ve hurt him as well,” said Victoria guiltily. Trevor had done so much for her and it seemed as if all she could do was hurt people who cared about her.

“Next time when he comes, tell him the truth. I’m sure he’ll understand. Maybe he’ll break off the wedding and relieve you,” said her mom. Victoria nodded. She would do that. But strangely neither Trevor called or visited her, nor Colton and neither did Sofia or Davion. Victoria was extremely depressed and had no idea what to do. Her mom tried to comfort her while they waited for some information on Colton.
