Chapter Twenty
"Sawyer, someone will come inside. I need to go," whispered Renée, hearing footsteps outside his room. Sawyer nodded and released her. She climbed down from his lap. But before she could go towards the door, Sawyer's hand caught her wrist.
"Will you go out on a date with me tomorrow?" He asked her hopefully. Renée's eyes shone with excitement and she nodded.
"Okay, be ready for me by evening, 6 o'clock, okay?" He told her. Renée smiled at him excitedly. She had been dreaming of going out with him since she was thirteen years old. Finally it was happening, they were going out on a date!
"Okay, " she whispered, rushing out of his room. She went inside and closed the door of her room and started doing a happy dance. "Yay, he asked me out to a date, " she sang happily.
She didn't get to interact much with Sawyer afterwards as one of the cattle at the diary farm was critical and her mom, Sawyer and uncle Keith went to check. Renée made dinner with aunt Kathy, humming a tune as she gave finishing touches to the new dish that she had learnt from granny Daisy.
"The bison bolognese has come out perfect, Renée. I can see that you've improved immensely," said aunt Kathy. Rihanna made the pappardelle to go with it while aunt Kathy made cheese and cauliflower breadsticks and a delicious carrot cake for dessert.
"Yeah, she's mastered the art of cooking for her future husband," said Rihanna with a knowing smile. Renée blushed profusely but glared at her big sister to stop her from giving away more information. Aunt Kathy looked at Renée and Rihanna excitedly.
"Who? Matt?" She asked. Rihanna rolled her eyes.
"No aunt Kathy. Renée hates Matt," said Rihanna much to aunt Kathy's curiosity.
"I knew it," said aunt Kathy excitedly.
"Umm, Anna, I'm done here. Can we go and complete my project work, please?" She said, her cheeks flushed with color. The way they were discussing her in her presence was making her throttle Rihanna.
"Sure," said Rihanna. Dinner was cooked and Renée pulled her out of the kitchen much to aunt Kathy's dismay. She was curious to know more about whom Renée liked. She already had guessed a little but now she was certain who it was.
"What were you upto, Anna?" Asked Renée in a whisper as they entered Rihanna's room. "Did you want to announce to aunt Kathy that I'm dating her son?" Asked Renée with a flushed face. Rihanna grinned.
"I was just helping you, girl. Do you think aunt Kathy doesn't know?" She asked a shocked Renée.
"Oh, she knows?" Asked Renée making Rihanna nod at her.
"Of course she does and let me tell you that she wants the two of you to be together, " said Rihanna. Renée was shocked to hear it.
"How do you know? Did aunt Kathy tell you?" Asked Renée curiously.
"Not specifically but whenever aunt Helena plans yours and Matt's wedding with aunt Chloe, she's the first one to object. She always asks them to speak to you first before going ahead. She advised them many times that you might like someone else, so they shouldn't plan anything without your knowledge, " said Rihanna. This was all news to Renée. So what Sawyer told her that day was true. They were indeed planning her and Matt's wedding.
Renée felt a little angry at her mom. "How can mom start planning my wedding without asking me? I'm only seventeen," she protested.
"Yeah, granny too scolded her. I think she has stopped at the moment," said Rihanna.
Afterwards they waited for some more time and when Renée's mom, Sawyer and uncle Keith returned, then everyone sat down to dinner. They discussed what happened at the farm.
"It couldn't be an accident, dad, " said Ryan. "First Chestnut was killed and now Clara cow, our oldest one was food poisoned. Thankfully, she has no calf to feed at the moment else if anyone consumed her milk, we would have lost our goodwill and customers," he pointed out.
"Ryan's right. This isn't a coincidence. I'm sure the McLean's have a hand in this," said uncle Keith.
"Look son, we know that they're our rivals but we cannot accuse them without any proof. Our rivalry has been going on for decades, why would they suddenly harm us now?" Asked their grand dad Joe Wilson.
"Because they think that Ryan and Georgia are having an affair and they're against it," said Ryder. There was a pin dropped silence in the room as everyone gaped at him and then at Ryan who looked quite uncomfortable.
"Well Ryan! Do you have anything to say?" Asked his dad.
"I'm not having an affair with her. She's my classmate and my project partner," said Ryan with a shrug. "But her family seems to be a bunch of illiterates who can't understand that," said Ryan, grumpily.
"Then, I'll talk to Allen McLean," said their granddad.
Ryan looked at him with worried eyes. "Please don't, granddad. I'll sort this out," he said, looking more worried and stressed. Everyone left the topic and concentrated on the meal.
"This bison bolognese is too good. Who made it?" Asked Renée's mom.
Aunt Kathy chuckled. "Can't you recognize your daughter's cooking, Helena?" She asked her. Everyone praised Renée and she blushed at the attention. "When did you learn to cook so well?" Asked her mom, looking pleased.
"Ana's granny taught me, " said Renée, glancing briefly at Sawyer, taking a second helping.
"Good, good, I can see that you're growing up, " said her mom.
"She's learning for her future husband, " said aunt Kathy and Renée blushed crimson. Everyone smiled and 'awwed', all except Sawyer, of course. He just quirked his eyebrows and stared at her.
"Really? I'll call Chloe and tell her right away," said her mom.
"She hates Matt, Helena, in case you didn't know," said aunt Kathy. Ryder chuckled.
"Yep, that she does, " said Ryder.
"Please can everyone stop. I'm right here," said Renée, going crazy at the crazy topic. Sawyer chuckled, feeling quite contented that his mom and Ryder had informed aunt Helena the truth.
"Right, we'd rather discuss Renée's eighteenth birthday coming up in a few months," said granny.
"I don't want a gala party, please. Only you'll and my friend, Ana and her family. No inviting aunt Chloe and Matt, " said Renée, rolling her eyes. Granny chuckled. She knew Renée wouldn't want them to be invited on her birthday.
"When's Rhett and Rex returning?" asked aunt Ruth.
"Rex will be returning next week. Rhett and Kennedy will return maybe next month, " informed uncle Kevin.
Thankfully no one discussed Renée after that and she went to take a stroll outside with Rihanna and the boys. Rihanna had started becoming a fitness freak, and wanted to stroll for fifteen minutes after dinner every night. "Everything feels so serene at this time, isn't it?" Asked Rihanna.
"Yeah, what if a grizzly comes here and grabs you?" Asked Ryan with a laugh.
"They hardly come this side. We're more at a risk from our rivals than grizzlies, " shrugged Rihanna.
Sawyer tried to hold Renée's hand but she didn't let him with her siblings and Rihanna around. "Ryan are you sure there's nothing between you and Georgia?" Asked Ryder with a worried look on his face. Ryan looked deep in thought.
"There's nothing," he said, looking at his feet and kicking a pebble.
"But you like her, don't you?" Asked Rihanna. Ryan looked at her with surprise.
"No," he lied, he couldn't tell them how his heart started beating faster everytime she came near him. He would rather die than fall for the rival's daughter!
"Georgia isn't a bad girl. It's her family who's weird. She's a misfit there actually, " said Ryder. Ryan was quiet. He couldn't say a thing else everyone would know the growing attraction that's ever present between him and Georgia.
Afterwards everyone went inside except Renée and Sawyer. Sawyer caught her hand in his and they slowly walked around the Wildcreek Ranch, hand in hand like secret lovers. "Sawyer, do you think aunt Kathy wants us to be together? Rihanna told me that she does, " asked Renée.
"I think she does," said Sawyer. Renée smiled with relief.
"I'm glad that she told mom that I don't like Matt, " she said and Sawyer's hand tightened his hold on hers.
"So, who do you like?" Asked Sawyer wanting to hear the three words again. They gave him the energy to carry on, the zeal to live.
"You, who else? " she told him, shyly.
"Ah, so why did you start learning to cook?" Asked Sawyer with a lazy grin on his face, but his eyes twinkled with happiness.
"You told me that you'd keep me with you forever if I learnt to cook well," she told him. Sawyer stopped in his tracks. What she said filled his heart with a raw emotion so overwhelming that he couldn't stay away without kissing her senseless. He pulled her into his arms, placing her hand around his neck.
"I'll keep you with me even if you don't know how to cook. You're mine for life," said Sawyer, his lips hovering near her sweet mouth. "So kiss me now," he demanded.
