Chapter Four
The next few weeks Daxton was busy with Denver's wedding preparations and work. Meg approached him nearly every alternate day inviting him to dinner with her parents and he had to think of some excuse to turn down her offer without hurting her feelings.
Life went on and thankfully he didn't see Aurora either her family again. He had no idea whether she shifted into the building where he had seen her last.
Two days prior to the wedding, they all left for Bernie's ranch where everything had already been arranged for them. It was celebration time again at the Taylor household and everyone was in the best of spirits except Daxton and of course his youngest brother Drake. It seemed that the teo of them were the black sheep of the family. While Daxton was unlucky in love Drake on the other hand loved the same girl, Alexis as his cousin Nate. Alexis was Nelson's wife, Annalise's sister and lived with her. While Nate got to date her, Drake had to live with his unrequited love. So he decided to move away to Stanford for further studies and leave Houston for a few years.
The wedding was finally over and the whole family returned back home. Denver had whisked his wife away for a quick weekend honeymoon. Celebrations were over and they returned back to their normal schedules. The morning after returning from Bernie's ranch, his ma handed Daxton a list of groceries to be bought from the departmental store. He drove over to the store and picked up every item but as he was about to go to the counter to pay, he saw Aurora struggling with a stroller and a trolley cart at the infants section. He walked over towards her with his trolley. It was now or never. He had to find out about her husband.
He stood in front of her. The pack of diapers fell from her hands in shock. Daxton stooped to pick it up.
"Hi Aurora! Do you remember me?" He asked her with a small smile.
Aurora stared at him wordlessly. Her face was expressionless as if she didn't want to talk to anyone. Dhe looked a little uncomfortable too. Before Daxton could say another word her husband approached her and led her towards the counter. Aurora didn't give him a single glance and walked away with him, pushing the stroller along. Daxton sighed and realized that she hadn't recognized him at all. There was actually no use pursuing her any more. He shouldn't talk to her.
The next day at work, when Meg again approached him, he agreed and went out with her to her house. It was a huge mansion, luxuriously decorated with expensive furniture as well as imported furnishings. Her parents were quite friendly though and spoke to him nicely. They seemed to like him too but Daxton wasn't comfortable. It was like a torture for him since every now and then Meg tried to hold his hand and he felt odd. He realized that he had made a mistake coming here. It might have encouraged her to dream of a future together with him. He knew he had to move on but he couldn't be with Meg. Next time she asked him out, he would make it clear to her. Finally the torture ended and he took his leave and drove home.
Daxton had reached his neighborhood when his eyes fell upon Aurora dejectedly walking down to her apartment pushing her baby stroller. It was the same apartment where he had seen her a few days back. He realized that she was living there. It seemed as if the energy to live had been drained out of her body. The huge packet that she was carrying suddenly tore and all the contents spilled on to the road. Daxton parked his car and rushed over to help her. She looked up at him with surprise.
"It's okay Daxton. I can manage," she told him. Daxton was surprised to hear his name on her lips. She remembered him?
"You remember me?" He asked with disbelief.
"I never forgot you," she told him. He handed her all the stuff and she thanked him and went into her building, leaving him stunned in the middle of the road. What did she mean by that? He wanted to run after her and ask her but she had already left. After standing and thinking for a while, he saw that she had left behind a packet of pasta behind. He picked it up and walked up to her apartment and rang the bell. In a few seconds her husband opened the door and glared at him. Before he could hand over the pasta, a woman came out. Daxton was surprised. Did he come to the wrong apartment? Where was Aurora?
"Honey, who is it?" Asked the woman. The man shrugged. Daxton looked at them with confusion. Was he cheating on Aurora?
"Is Aurora there? She left this on the road when her stuff fell," he said. The woman nodded in understanding.
"Aura, there's someone to see you," she yelled. Aurora came rushing out of her room and her eyes widened seeing Daxton.
"Oh, I, please come inside," she asked him, looking embarrassed.
"I came to give you this. You dropped it," he said handing her the pack. Aurora took it from his hands.
"Thank you. Come inside please," she still invited him.
"Aura, we're going out, okay? Can you manage Leo alone?" Asked the woman. Aurora nodded and they left.
"What's going on Aurora? Who are they?" He asked curiously.
"That's my cousin Seth and his fiancée, Lara. They've eloped from their home and have taken shelter here," said Aurora. Daxton's mouth hung at her words. So he wasn't her husband. Then the question was where was her husband? Ever since he had arrived, he had only seen her with the baby and her cousin. His phone buzzed with an incoming call from his dad.
"I'll see you again, Aurora. Bye," he said, going out to take his dad's call. There was a faint hope in his heart after that talk that maybe all isn't lost.
When he went home, he was in a better mood. He had noticed that she didn't have any rings on her finger. Did I that mean that she wasn't married after all? Could he still hope? Maybe like his twin Denver had gone through a rough phase and found his happiness afterwards, he too would find light at the end of this dark tunnel. He wouldn't give up.
The next day with a new found hope in his heart, Daxton started the day. At office however, he was unable to avoid an over-enthusiastic Meg who kept harping on how her parents loved Daxton.
"My parents like you a lot. They said that you should come often," she told him. Daxton smiled and started his work. Yet Meg kept sitting with him at his cubicle.
"Is your twin married yet?" She asked curiously.
"Yeah," Daxton answered. Meg looked happy with his answer.
"I love siblings. How many do you have?" She asked. She was the only child of her parents and as such must have always longed for siblings.
Daxton told her about all his siblings, their wives and their kids. Then he talked of his cousins, their wives and their kids. Meg listened to him wide-eyed.
"I would love to meet your family," she said with a dreamy look on her face.
"Okay, I'll take you to meet them some day," he said casually, not having any intention of actually taking her.
The whole day, she tried to talk to him and Daxton was inwardly pissed off with her extra interest. He wanted to tell her that he wasn't interested in her but she didn't directly talk to him about her feelings. All she did was casual talk and Daxton obviously couldn't bring up the topic of feelings all of a sudden. So he tolerated her and finally when it was time to leave, he heaved a sigh of relief and drove home. As he passed Aurora's apartment, he couldn't control the urge to go and see her. So he simply parked his car and walked towards her apartment. Without a thought, something drove him to ring her doorbell. He waited impatiently for her to open the door.
After a minute, she opened the door carrying the baby in her arms. Her eyes widened with surprise seeing him. He smiled at her. "Hi, can I come in?" He asked already going inside before she could decline.
"You're already inside, Daxton, " she pointed out with a laugh. Daxton grinned at her. His heart doing a somersault hearing her infectious laughter. The baby in her arms started wailing and Aurora tried her best to calm him down.
"It's okay Leo, I'll just now give you your medicine, baby," she cooed to Leo but he just wouldn't stop. Daxton looked at her struggles with concern. There were dark circles under her eyes and she looked sleep-deprived and tired. Daxton's heart went out to her. It was clear that she really needed help. But what was strange was the absence of the father of the baby.
"Give Leo to me Aurora. You go and get his medicine," he offered.
