Chapter Twelve
The door opened and their mom gaped at them with shock. "Sofi? What happened? Are you unwell? My God, Greg, come quick," said their mom, rushing forward to help Sofia into the house.
"She's pregnant and unwell, mom. Davion's away on some business trip and there's no surety when he'd return. So I brought Sofi home with me," said Victoria. Their mom beamed happily.
"Sofi's pregnant? Oh my gosh! You've done the right thing by bringing her home," said their mom. Victoria breathed a sigh of relief that she could so easily convince their mom. Their dad came rushing out of the study and smiled seeing the two of them.
"What a pleasant surprise! We were thinking of visiting you two," said their dad.
"Sofi's pregnant. Davion's away on a business tour so Vicky brought her here," said their mom.
"That's good news no doubt but couldn't you wait for a few more years? You need to finish your studies first," said their dad.
"C'mon, Greg. It's no use saying these things now. We got her married at eighteen so it was bound to happen, " said their mom, helping Sofia to her room. Sofia felt relieved to be in her childhood room. In the last three months, nothing had changed here. Her house as well as her room were just the same as it was when she left Las Vegas. As if it was just yesterday.
"Freshen up and I'll serve you both dinner," said her mom.
"I can't eat a thing, mom," said Sofia.
"She has thrown up the whole time, mom," informed Victoria.
"Oh! Should call Dr. Graham?" Asked their mom with concern. Dr Graham was their old next door neighbour whom they always summon for every little emergency.
"No, mom. We'll consult a gynaecologist a few days later. Let Sofi settle down first," said Victoria.
"Okay, I'll bring some soup and medicine, " said their mom leaving the room. Victoria helped Sofia freshen up and change out of her soiled clothes. After eating a little, Sofia felt a little better. Her mom wanted to sit down and chat with her but Victoria somehow steered her out if Sofia's room, letting her rest in peace.
Reno, Las Vegas
Colton drove back home after a tiring day, excitedly at the prospect of meeting Victoria. He parked his car on Davion’s driveway and looked at his house. It looked dark with no lights on. Strange. Did Sofia and Victoria go somewhere? The security guard came towards him.
“Sofia ma’am and her sister have left today, sir. Greta locked the house and left too,” he informed a shocked Colton. Colton gaped at him unable to comprehend why Sofia would leave with Victoria? Did it have something to do with him?
“Did they say, where they were going?” he asked the guard.
“Yes, Greta told me that they went to Las Vegas, forever,” said the guard. Forever? Colton was more puzzled than he was ever before. He wouldn’t call Greta and find out what exactly was going on. He thanked the guard and went home with a confused mind and a heavy heart. He tried calling Greta but she didn’t receive any of his calls. So that left him with only one option. He needed to wrap up his work at Reno and fly to Las Vegas. He needed to see Victoria again. There were so many questions revolving in his head and he needed answers to them.
Las Vegas
The next few days, Sofia was violently sick. The stress, the sleepless nights, the nausea had taken a toll on her health and she had to be admitted to the nearest hospital.
"I won't let you return to Reno before you gain back your health, " said their mom sternly. Sofia nodded, she couldn't tell her that going back wasn't an option left for her anymore. She had closed that chapter forever. She hadn't switched on her mobile even once after leaving Reno. So she really had no idea what was happening there. Victoria had given her an old mobile to use in the meantime. After spending two days at the hospital, Sofia regained her health and was much better.
"The doctor said that you're fine now. They'll release you today. I'll go downstairs to the reception desk to complete the formalities, " said her dad. Sofia nodded. Ever since she had returned, her parents and Victoria had been too busy with her to do anything else. She felt guilty for disrupting their peaceful life.
"C'mon Sofi, let's get you ready," said Victoria, as the nurse approached Sofia to change her out of the hospital outfit. Sofia followed their instructions and changed like an automaton. She was much better and had gained her strength back. The nausea was also under control and so were her emotions. The last few days she had thought a lot about her condition. With her family supporting her with so much love, nothing seemed impossible to her now. She would complete her studies and concentrate on her pregnancy right now. There was no immediate need to take up a job right away. Her parents wouldn't want her to. They were quite well off financially and therefore all she needed to do was take one day at a time with her pregnancy.
Finally they all returned home. Their mom appointed a housekeeper, Gwendolyn who would take care of Sofia as well as the house. Gwendolyn gave her small meals at regular intervals and helped her with everything. Sofia got better day by day with so much care and attention. Thankfully the nausea didn't return and she was able to continue with her studies online from the University of Reno. Her friends at college, Caleb and his girlfriend, Tessa helped her a lot. They too were in the same class as her and were the only ones who had helped her throughout. Victoria started going to her college too since Sofia was much better and Gwendolyn efficiently handled everything at home.
After an exhausting day at college, Victoria was glad that it was over for the day. The next day was a Saturday and she could catch up on sleep. But as bad luck never left her side, she collided with none other than a furious Colton Glenn right outside her college gates.
"You? What the f*ck are you doing here?" Yelled a furious Victoria. She had hoped that he would leave her alone after their last encounter. She had made it quite clear that she hated him and didn't want anything to do with him.
"Why did you leave without informing me?" He yelled back at her taking her by surprise. His fingers gripped her arms as he shook her with fury. Victoria was too stunned to react. He looked like an angry lion ready to attack! Coming to her senses, she jerked free off his hold.
"I'm not answerable to you for my actions. Get lost now. I need to go home, " said Victoria, trying to push past him to go to the parking area but he again caught her arm.
"Of course you are. I went to Davion's house but it's locked. I went to Greta's house but she's left to go to her daughter's house. What's going on? Where's Sofia? Why is Davion's house locked?" Asked Colton furiously, shaking her.
"Ask that ba*stard of a friend what he has done. Sofia has left him forever and gone back home. She's happy without him. She'll dispatch the divorce papers soon. If he comes here ever, my dad will murder him for destroying Sofia's life," warned Victoria, yanking her arm free from his grasp. Colton staggered with shock as his mouth hung open hearing her.
"Sofia left Davion? She's giving him a divorce? Why? Davion loves her, Victoria. Please don't do this. He'll die. He has no one else to call his own," said Colton looking distraught with worry. Victoria scoffed at him.
"Love? Does he know the meaning of the word?" She yelled at him angrily. Colton shook his head, lost in his own thoughts.
"I know that he's weird. I know that he never believed in love and relationships but still he loves Sofia. As far as I know, he hasn't done anything to hurt Sofia," said Colton, trying his best to convince her.
"Oh really? Why don't you check with the latest issue of The Metropolitan, page number 30?" Said Victoria, with a hateful sneer.
"Don't believe in these magazines and gossip. They cook up anything and print it for more publicity," said Colton, looking at her with disbelief.
"Look Colton. I don't have time for your sh*t. We're not fools that we'll be convinced by your lies. There's a picture of your friend kissing another woman. Is that a lie? There's news that he had been with her the whole time at the inauguration party of his casino. Is that a lie?" Asked Victoria furiously. Colton stared at her broodingly. "I'll tell you what is a lie. His marriage with Sofia was a lie. He didn't even once ask her how she is. He didn't even bother to know what happened to her. He didn't even once ask her whether she would have liked to accompany him to the party. As his wife Sofia should have been there instead of his wh*re. Right?" Asked Victoria furiously.
"You've got it all wrong. I'll check with this article and then talk to you," said Colton, deep in thought.
"There's nothing to talk," said Victoria, pushing past him and running to the parking area to her car. Thankfully Colton didn't follow her and stood at the same spot watching her. Victoria started her car and drove off leaving him still standing there.
