Chapter Seventeen

Ember blushed to the roots of her hair. Omg! He had heard it all! How much more embarrassing could it get?

"What are you doing here?" She asked, trying to cover her embarrassment.

"Why? Can't I come looking for my girlfriend?" He smirked and Ember looked here and there and everywhere but at him. It seemed to amuse him even more and he touched her chin and forced her to look at him. He gazed into her eyes trying to say something which his lips couldn't utter. Ember stared back at him, trying to decipher what was going on in his mind.

"So are we official then?" He asked teasingly instead and the look that was there a few seconds ago was gone.

"Get lost, Rex. You know that I meant it only to dissuade Dr Craig," she told him with a warning look, walking away from the doctor's office towards her own department.

"You wish Ember. I will make you mine, soon, " he said quietly, his eyes flashing, as if he meant every word he said.

"It won't happen, ever," she swore.

Rex grinned. "That passionate kiss was proof enough that we're meant for each other, " he whispered into her ear before walking off towards Sawyer's room. "Catch you later after your duty." With that he disappeared but Ember just shook her head. She knew that when he knew everything about her, he wouldn't want her anymore. Yet she felt happy with what Rex said to her. It made her smile, it made her heart want to burst out into a song, it made her want to hope for a life with Rex. She sailed through her duties for the rest of the day with the hope of seeing him again.

After her duty when she sent to Sawyer's room, she was disappointed to see Rihanna and Ryder instead of Rex.

"Hey Ember! Wait, why did your face suddenly fall seeing us?" Asked Ryder, grinning at her.

"Why should it? You're imagining things," said Ember.

"Sure I am. Well I'm case you're dying to know why your Rex isn't here, let me inform you that he's left this for you," she said, handing her a chit of paper. Ember took it from her and opened it trying hard to suppress her excitement.
She read it with her heart beating wildly in her chest,

Wait for me at 6:15 tonight beside aunt Charlotte's boutique.

Rex

Rihanna wiggled her eyebrows. "Date, huh?" She asked curiously. Ember shook her head vigorously.

"No, maybe he has some work for me at the boutique, " she finished lamely and the two chuckled.

"Sure, that should be it," said Ryder, taunting her.

Ember ran towards the door. She had to get ready for her first date or whatever it was with Rex. "Gotta go, see you later, " she said hurrying out of the room. She rushed home to shower and change for her date. Wanting to look good, she put on a peach-colored, boat-necked, off-shoulder dress with a fitted bodice and ending in beautiful folds near the hemline. She swept up her hair in a messy bun, loosening some tendrils to frame her face. Applying a lip balm, a dash of her favorite perfume and a little moisturizer, she was ready.

When she went to the living room, granny gasped. "You're looking so beautiful, Emmy. Where are you off to in such a hurry?" She asked her.

"Rex asked me to meet him granny. I'll just see what he wants," said Ember blushing profusely.

"Sure, dear. Call me if you change your plans, " said granny cheerily. Ember rolled her eyes and ran out of the door. Rex had just called to her to talk to her maybe about that girlfriend, boyfriend topic maybe. Why were everyone making a big issue out of this? She walked down to aunt Charlotte's boutique, her heart beating more rapidly as she neared it.

It was already 6:12, yet she couldn't see Rex anywhere. Had he forgotten about his note? She reached the front of the boutique when Rex's Ford F-250 stopped right in front of her. "Hop in," he said, looking for his aunt through the door of the boutique.

Ember climbed in and strapped her seat belt. He drove away from the market place, away from her house. "What do you want Rex?" She asked, looking around to see where they were going.

"Let's not get into what I want. The list is too big," said Rex, with a grin. Ember rolled her eyes.

"You know what I mean, Rex, " she said.

"No, I don't. Tell me," said Rex with a wicked smile. He seemed to be in a strange mood and Ember was getting no where with him.

"I meant why did you call me here?" She asked and he smiled knowingly but didn't utter a single word. "I'm waiting Rex. Can you please tell me where we are going?" She asked him, feeling like punching the grin off his face.

"We're going on a date, Ember. So relax and enjoy, yes?" He said at last and she gaped at him.

"I'm not going on a date, Rex. Stop the car," she said. Wasn't a date a thing when you get to know someone more romantically? She didn't want that with anyone. She was scared that what happened to her in the past would be repeated. She didn't want to get into a physical relationship. Her mind kept thinking and rethinking and went into a panic mode. "I said, stop the car, Rex. I don't want to go to a date." She gritted out nervously.

Rex gave her a concerned look and parked the car off the road, near a little creek. He climbed out of the truck and helped her out. "Don't touch me." She gritted out. Rex's hands left her.

"I was just kidding, Ember. I was going to Helena to order stuff for aunt Charlotte's boutique so I thought I would take you out shopping. We would have dinner at the same restaurant like last time. That's all," said Rex, feeling hurt. Ember softened after hearing his innocent plan.

She felt embarrassed for lashing out like that at him. She sat down on a boulder near the creek. "I'm sorry that I overreacted," she said quietly, looking at him as he sat beside her with sagging shoulders, looking dejected and sad.

Ember felt terribly guilty and she just wrapped her hands around his neck and drew him close to her. "I'm sorry Rex. Please cheer up," she apologized. He stiffened at her embrace but Ember just stroked his hair and he moaned with pleasure.

"I will cheer up only if you kiss me like last night," he said, breathing hard into her neck. Ember touched his cheek and  kissed his other one. Rex groaned and turned his head and captured her lips in a hungry kiss, more passionate than yesterday's. His warm tongue ran along Ember's mouth as he brought his hand to her face, cupping her flushed cheek. Her mind is no longer in charge as a strange passion and longing from deep within her took charge over every fiber of her body. She opened her mouth eagerly to him and he groaned with satisfaction, his hot tongue sliding in to explore her sweet mouth. Both his hands went to her hips and he pulled her closer to his hard, warm chest. Ember surrendered to the longing and kissed him back with the same passion.

"Ember," he pulled back to whisper and before she was aware, he brought his mouth again to hers, sliding his tongue inside to resume where he had left off. It was gentler this time and more lingering as they explored one another's mouth. When Rex finally released hers, she missed his warmth immediately.

"I wanted to kiss you so badly after last night," he whispered, softly sucking her ear lobe.

"I'm sure you've been kissed better," said Ember, looking away, feeling a little jealous. Rex caught her chin and forced her to look at him.

"I don't go about kissing every girl around. I've never had any relationship with any woman, ever, contrary to what you think of me," he clarified, looking a little hurt at her judgement of him.

"Someone like you never had a girlfriend?" She asked with disbelief.

"What do you mean by someone like me?" He asked with interest. She had said this for the second time and this time he wanted to know.

"Someone as handsome and famous as you are. All the girls of Fordsville pursue you and yet you are single," she said.

Rex smiled. "You find me handsome?" He asked incredulously. Ember rolled her eyes.

"You are and you know it, " she told him flatly.

"Can I ask you something?" She started hesitantly.

"Ask," he gave her permission.

"Why are you still single, Rex? You said before that you were waiting for me. I don't understand," she said softly, her eyes looking straight into his soul.
