Chapter Three
It was late by the time Gilbert could actually wrap up his work for the day. Most of the employees had left except for a handful who were wrapping up for the day. Gilbert went down the elevator, tired and exhausted and ready to hit the bed. The elevator doors slid open and he strode out towards the main entrance. As he went, his glance fell upon the reception desk and his eyes popped out seeing Jacqueline locking everything to go out.
"You're still here?" He asked incredulously. It was ten o'clock already and she should have gone home two hours back.
"Yeah, everything was disorganized. So I just sorted the stuff so that tomorrow I wouldn't have to do that," she told him.
"Are you done?" He asked her, staring at her tired young face. Her hair had slipped off and she had given up with the bun and tied a ribbon around it in a low ponytail. It looked very pretty indeed! Gilbert shook his crazy thoughts away. Since when did he start noticing how pretty his employees looked? He knew the answer to that question. Since Juliet joined work.
"Yes," she answered, picking up her handbag. "Bye Mr Prescott, sir. See you tomorrow, " she said with a polite smile and walked towards the main door. Gilbert followed her in a daze watching her hot figure deliciously sway in front of him. Seeing her walking towards the main gates, Gilbert came to his senses.
"Juliet, wait. How are you going home?" He asked.
"Oh, I'll take the bus if it's available, " she told him witha wave of her hand.
"It's very late. I'll drop you home. Come here, " said Gilbert.
"Thanks Mr. Prescott sir. I can manage," she shrugged.
"It's an order, get into the car right now," he stated and she walked back meekly into his car much to his satisfaction.
"John let's go. So, where do you stay, Juliet?" He asked with interest, looking at her sitting awkwardly at the far end of the seat, sticking to the door, struggling with her skirt. He glanced at her legs exposed from the skirt. Smooth and creamy! He coughed and coughed and looked away. How creepy was he getting every minute in her company! As if he'd never seen a woman before.
"3261 New Bold Avenue, Bronx," she told him, hesitantly. It wasn't a neighborhood where the likes of him might ever had visited but it was all she could afford.
As they headed towards the address mentioned, Gilbert couldn't keep his eyes to himself, as if it had a say of it's own. It kept wandering towards her. "Did you like your first day here?" He asked to keep himself occupied.
"Yes, I loved it, " she clasped her hands and grinned. "My new colleague's too entertaining, so yeah, we never had a dull moment, " she said with a musical laugh.
"Oh, who's your new colleague? What's her name?" Asked Gilbert, uninterested.
"You don't know that it's a he? His name's Kyle Rodgers. He has also been recruited today just like me," said Jacqueline with a smile which made Gilbert look at her with interest. A strange sense of jealousy spread all over his body. He was the hot boss right in front of her nose and she was going gaga over some Kyle? He didn't like the guy at all.
"I see," he said grimly, determined to transfer the man to some other department the first thing tomorrow morning. He pulled out his phone and started a conversation with Alex Morgan, his administrative head. Tomorrow morning was a long time. He'd do the needful right now. Alex did as asked, shifted Kyle to the marketing department while the lady there would handle the front reception with Jacqueline. Gilbert placed his phone back and leaned back in his chair, quite satisfied with his job.
"You can drop me here, Mr. Prescott sir," Jacqueline said. Gilbert looked around seeing that they were already in Bronx.
"Where's your house?" He asked, still looking. It didn't look like a safe area at all at 10:30 in the night.
"It's a five minutes walk from here. I'll manage," she said with a polite smile.
"It's late Juliet. I'll drop you at your doorstep, " he insisted strictly.
They drove down the narrow lane with similar looking small standalone buildings built close to one another. "Please stop in front of that building ahead, with the white railing covered balcony on the ground floor. That's where I live," she said a little hesitantly.
John stopped the blue Lamborghini right in front of the building and Jacqueline smiled at Gilbert. "Thank you Mr. Prescott sir," she said, giving him a dazzling smile and opening the door to get down from the car. The door to her house opened and around five girls of Jacqueline's age trooped out to the balcony to watch the luxurious car with interest.
"Your friends?" Asked Gilbert. Was she having a party or what?
"Roommates, " she informed and after getting down, closed the door and waved at him. He watched her mesmerized as she ran up the steps and the girls jumped at her and she squealed with delight, making a dash for the door inside. A smile played on his lips seeing their craziness. Even John chuckled.
"Shall we leave sir?" He asked when Jacqueline had gone inside followed by her girl gang.
"Yes, John, " said Gilbert. He was surprised at how so many girls could live in such a small apartment together.
"Ooo Jackie, you bitch. Where did you find a man with eyes as blue as his Lamborghini?" Asked Lydia, with dark short curly hair and a very curvy body. She worked at a small restaurant nearby as a chef.
"I swear. I was already drooling at the sight of him," said Maria, who was two years older with jet black straight hair. She worked as a hairdresser at an upscale hair salon.
"Shut up bitches, he's my Romeo and I'm his Juliet, " said Jacqueline with dreamy eyes. The truth was that ever since she'd met that hot man in the elevator, her life had turned upside down. She was aware of his gaze upon her all the time. The way his eyes roamed all over her body and settled on her hips didn't go unnoticed by her. She was shocked when she found out that he was her boss. She bravely faced him and his questions and most importantly his hot gaze constantly checking her out.
There wasn't a minute when she didn't think what that hottest male specimen was doing in his office. Thankfully the funny Kyle who was actually a clown kept her entertained or else she would have gone crazy dreaming about her Romeo.
The girls giggled and fell on top of one another. "Doesn't your Romeo have a name?" Asked Claudia, who was pretty with warm chocolate brown eyes. She worked as a store room in charge at a book store.
"Girls he's my boss, okay. Now don't bore me. I need sleep or else Romeo will kick me out of work tomorrow, " said Jacqueline with a laugh, pushing them away and going to her room which she shared with Diane, a student pursuing her Masters in English Literature. She wanted to work at a publishing house.
"Romeos don't kick, baby. They kiss," said Layla who was a sweet, blonde girl working at a departmental store. "Like this," she said, puckering her lips and making kissing sounds which the others mimicked too, driving Jacqueline crazy.
"Get lost, all of you, I need sleep," she squealed, throwing the cushions at them. They all ran away except Diane, who lay down on her bed with her phone. Jacqueline showered and changed into her pajamas and sat down on her bed to comb her hair.
"Jackie, do you really think of your boss as your Romeo?" She asked.
"Yes, I'm already crushing on him, girl, " said Jacqueline. "When he speaks, his voice makes my whole body feel alive. And when he says my name? I feel like kissing him every time he says, 'Juliet'," she said mimicking Gilbert's way of pronouncing her name. Diane sat clutching her heart.
"Wow, are you in love or what?" She asked with curiosity.
"No right now I'm just crushing on him. I'll tell you guys when I fall for him hook, line and sinker," said Jacqueline with a sigh. "Good night Di."
"Good night Jackie, " said Di.
Jacqueline couldn't sleep as a pair of blue eyes as blue as his Lamborghini, stalked her in her dreams. She had never had any time for guys. After her dad had abandoned them fourteen years ago, her mom had struggled to bring her up. They had been managing when her mom was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer. Jacqueline was just eighteen and had to sell off their small apartment to bear her mom's medical costs. The bills started mounting high and after two years her mom died. Jacqueline was homeless and alone when she met Layla while going to a job interview at her departmental store. After knowing that she was homeless, Layla had brought Jacqueline to their shared apartment. Jacqueline worked at the departmental store and paid her bills. Her studies had been paid for by her mom before her diagnosis.
Thus this place had been her home for the past one year and she loved her flatmates and they loved her back. They were all the family she had and needed.
