Chapter Two

There was a knock in his door and his PA, Stanley Ricks peered inside. "Sir, the candidates are here. Here's the list. Whom do we call first?" He asked, walking into his room and handing Gilbert the list. Gilbert was used to Stanley. They shared a good rapport and both being extremely professional, they clicked since day one. Stanley thus stayed working for him for the past six years.

Gilbert took the list and checked the candidates. There were three males and the rest females. "Call in the alphabetical order of first names. Leave this list here for me, " he stated.

"Yes, sir, sending Mr Andrew Jones, first then," he said, glancing at the list and then walking out.

Gilbert didn't like Andrew Jones at all. It seemed he had a knowledge about everything apart from the post he had applied for.

"Thank you Mr Jones. You will be intimidated by email if you're selected for the post," said Gilbert, dismissing him. They needed four receptionists, two for the main reception and one for his own floor and another at the marketing department reception desk. The next two were even worse. One was a college dropout with no need or interest to work.  She needed pocket money which her dad denied her. The third was a party animal and he wanted money to pay for his hobby hence he needed the job.

Gilbert started getting frustrated with the type of candidates. He had a word with Finn and found out that Peterson had already selected two candidates while Alex hadn't shortlisted any yet. The next candidate was good and decent. She was in her mid thirties with a good work experience.  She looked like she needed the job. Gilbert selected her for the marketing department. The remaining were not upto the mark. He had purposely postponed Jacqueline Drewitt's interview.

There was a soft knock on his door and his heart started beating faster. "Come in," he said as professionally as he could, eager to see her again. Jacqueline peeped inside and saw a man behind a huge desk staring outside the huge bay windows behind him. His back was towards her. She walked in and closed the door.

"Good afternoon sir," she said, anxiously. Gilbert found her voice very sweet and delightful like it could soothe his soul. Shaking his head to clear his unwelcome thoughts, he whirled around on his swivel chair to face her. She gasped seeing the man from the elevator and smacked her forehead, muttering to herself in her mind. Gilbert stared at her with interest. What type of reaction was that? What was she muttering?

"Good afternoon, so we meet again, right?" He asked. "What are you muttering?" He asked in an amused tone seeing her still talking to herself.

"I was fighting with God for making me lose my only chance at a good job," she said. "Should I keep standing?" She asked him. Gilbert couldn't help the smile from breaking out on his lips. She was very entertaining indeed.

"I'm sorry. Please sit down," he told her. She dragged a chair and sank into it. "Why do you think that you lost your chance?" He asked with interest. Her eyes widened, dragging his attention to them. They were a sparkling blue with silver specks from the reflection of the lights upon them. They were actually hypnotic.

"You might now take it out on me for not telling you my name. Well, I'm Jacqueline Juliet Drewitt but I hate my name. I love my middle name though. I'm twenty-one years of age. I just graduated from college with Mass Communication and PR. I love talking. It gives me happiness. If you must know, I don't have any work experience but if you give me a chance to prove myself, I'll work hard and give my hundred percent to the job," she rambled on for sometime and Gilbert just quietly watched her and listened to her musical voice as if lost in her. She had a quality of captivating one when she talked. There wasn't any indecency or flirting tone in her tone, she looked adorable in fact. Gilbert blinked to come back to reality. He was the boss interviewing a candidate and that's that. He couldn't get carried away and lose focus from the task at hand.

"I see. Why do you like your middle name?" Asked Gilbert with interest, knowing that he was deviating from the topic.  He was amazed at himself. How did he come up with that question instead of a job-related one? This was a strange interview indeed!

"Don't you get it? You too might be having the same problem. You see, Jacqueline and Gilbert are all old-fashioned names. They make you seem old. Juliet is a modern name and so is Ashton. Don't you think so?" She asked with eyes flashing with excitement. Gilbert's jaws dropped. How was she so accurate? He had always fought with his parents for naming him Gilbert. He hated his name actually.  In fact, he liked Ashton more than Gilbert.

"See? You agree. I knew it," she exclaimed excitedly. Gilbert nodded with a smile on his lips.

"Okay, Juliet, so why do you want a receptionists job with your degree?" He asked at last being able to bring the interview onto the right track.

"Believe me, I don't, " she rolled her eyes and Gilbert's mouth hung open.  What was she saying? "If I had my way and if my parents were alive to support me, I would have been a Broadway Star," she said and Gilbert's eyes widened with disbelief.

"However, since that didn't happen, here I am with a Mass Comm degree to apply for a receptionists job. After all a receptionist needs to communicate with people and deal with them effectively. So yeah, I love doing that and I guess I'm fit for this job. It's no use cribbing over what you can't have. I believe in being happy doing what I have and what I can," said Jacqueline.

Gilbert was more mesmerized by her words. "So, if you have an abusive and angry client who has been through and experience with our products and services, what would you do with him? Yell back at him? Ignore him and have him thrown out? Or listen to his problems and crib about how bad the company treats you too?" He asked, watching her facial expressions change as a look of incredulity came over her face.

"What the hell! None of those. I don't do yelling, ignoring, cribbing. Nah!" She said, glaring at him for even suggesting them. Gilbert sat back and just watched her with interest. Never in his life had he been so entertained. She indeed was fit for a Broadway musical.

"Then?" He prompted with a look of amusement on his face.

"I would listen to him, talk to him, try to solve his problem and help him out and turn him into a satisfied and happy client in the end. You see, Mr Prescott sir, every happy customer counts for the company's goodwill," she told him and he smiled with a nod. It was true actually.

"Good to know that you feel that way," he said appreciatively.

"How important is this job for you. How much hard work are you willing to put into this?" He asked. Did she need this job for just pocket money?

"You're actually asking why would one need oxygen. Work to me is what oxygen is to you. I need it to survive. I don't have anyone, no parents, no family, only a huge medical expense which I'm paying off. So I obviously will give my all to this job if I'm lucky enough to get selected, " she said. Gilbert was impressed by her words although he didn't show it.

"Are you ill? What medical expenses are you paying off?" Asked Gilbert curiously.

"My mom's," said Jacqueline, quietly with her eyes cast downwards. Gilbert left it at that.

"How soon can you join us?" He asked her.

"Right now?" She said and Gilbert smiled again at her enthusiasm.

"Fine, join us right now," he told her.

"Really? OMG, I can't believe that you really gave me the job, Mr. Prescott, sir, " she squealed, clapping her hands.

Gilbert smiled. He called Alex, his administrative head and informed him about his selection.

"Goto the administrative department on the first floor and meet Alex Morgan. He'll do the necessary formalities," he told her. She nodded and left his office. Gilbert smiled remembering her words, the strange interview that he took for the first time in his life. He didn't want to end the interview at all. He wanted to talk to her the whole day. Sje made him smile more than he ever did before. The whole day, he was curious to know what Juliet was doing. Who was she chatting with now? How many admirers did she gain on her first day? He was the boss, he couldn't go looking for his receptionist? So he sat down to get some work done but his thoughts were upon her for the rest of the day!
