Chapter Five

Aurora was touched by Daxton's offer. When Leo's own father had never ever wanted to see him, here Daxton wanted to take him in his arms. The sweet gesture overwhelmed her and made her hope for the impossible.

"It's okay, Daxton, I can manage," said Aurora as Leo howled more. She didn't want to force anyone to help her. She had pulled it on her own for so long and she could pull it further without anyone's sympathy.

Daxton reached out and took him in his arms. "It's okay. Go and get his medicine," he insisted. Aurora left to go into her bedroom. There wasn't any nursery since Seth and Lara were using the spare bedroom. She came out with the medicine bottle when her eyes fell upon Daxton.

He was rocking Leo and making cute noises and talking to him. Strangely Leo had stopped howling and was watching him with wonder in his baby blue eyes.

"You're so good with kids. It seems you're quite experienced," said Aurora with a smile. Daxton turned towards her with a gurgling Leo in his arms. His cheeks colored a little.

"Yeah, I handle my nephews and neices all the time at home," he told her.

"Oh, don't you have any kids of your own?" Asked Aurora. Daxton's face broke into a grin.

"I've got to win a girl first to have kids, isn't it?" He smirked seeing her blush at his bashful statement.

"So why is Leo crying so much? Is he unwell or something?" He asked her. Aurora administered him his medicine.

"No we had gone for his vaccination today. He's a little cranky since then," said Aurora.

"Oh, that's normal, I guess," he told her and she nodded. Then he looked around. It seemed that she was alone with Leo at home. "Your cousin and his fiancée aren't here?" He asked curiously.

"No, they left in the afternoon for Las Vegas, to get married," she informed him. "They wanted me to accompany them but with Leo unwell, I couldn't, " said Aurora. Leo laid his head on his broad shoulders and Daxton felt a tug at his heartstrings for the little guy. He gently stroked his little back and Leo clutched onto his shirt and fell asleep within two minutes. Aurora had gone to the kitchen to quickly make dinner.

"He's fallen asleep so fast?" She asked him with disbelief. Daxton grinned and nodded. He had a way with all his neices and nephews having handled them since birth.

"Stay for dinner? If you don't have any other plams, that is," she said with a nervous smile.

Daxton walked towards her with Leo fast asleep in his arms. "Sure," he agreed, a little too enthusiastically.

"Here, you can tuck him in," he told her. Aurora nodded and washed her hands, drying them quickly. Then she took Leo from his arms, their hands brushing with each other's in the process. Aurora's eyes flew up to his and Daxton's heartbeats stopped for a second. He knew that the feelings that he had for her were still as strong as ever. He still loved her. Maybe she too could feel the strong magnetic pull that they shared between them. Aurora took a sleeping Leo and walked towards her bedroom with Daxton slowly following her to see what she was doing. Her heart was beating rapidly in her chest as the memories of their kiss came vividly to her mind. Her first and last kiss! She laid Leo gently down on her bed and after adjusting the cushions around him, she walked out.

Daxton walked towards the the living room and she followed him. "How old is Leo?" Asked Daxton curiously.

"Four months," said Aurora, with a small smile on her lips. They sat down opposite each other.

"I think you should slowly shift him to a crib in a nursery. It would be too risky to keep him on the bed unattended," he advised. Aurora nodded.

"I'll see if I can find someone to get the nursery ready for me," she told him.

"I can get it ready if you don't mind," offered Daxton. He looked forward to the opportunity of spending more time with her. Aurora looked at him with disbelief.

"Are you sure you can do it? I mean, we have to go and order the furniture and then set it up too. I have no idea what to buy and how to set it up," she admitted, feeling a little embarrassed. Daxton smiled.

"Oh leave all that to me. I've done it thrice already," said Daxton. Aurora was impressed by him. She nodded with relief.

"Thanks a lot, Daxton, " she said, softly. She didn't know anyone here and she didn't want to take help from her brothers. She had broken all ties with them forever. All her old acquaintances had moved away and since she was never allowed to have any friend, she didn't know anyone whom she could ask for help.

He grinned at her. "Anytime," he said, casually, picking up a bottle of water from the coffee table in front of him. As he drank, she couldn't help but watch with admiration how his Adam's apple moved up and down. He placed the bottle and looked at her, his piercing gaze making her blush. She knew that he had caught her checking him out.

"I'll go and make dinner," she told him, getting up and escaping to the kitchen, her heartbeats accelerating with embarrassment. What he must be thinking of her? She didn't want to give him the false encouragement knowing that she was not worthy of him, she was too broken to be with anyone. Sighing, Aurora started making the chicken stew and rice. She was too exhausted to make anything else. Would he like such a simple dinner? He might be used to lavish dinners at his house. She felt awkward at having invited him but what other options did she have. He was helping her so much and she had to offer something at least.

The hair at the nape of her neck stood up when he came inside the kitchen and stood behind her. "What are you making?" He asked in a low, husky tone which caused goosebumps to erupt on her arms. She couldn't believe her body's reaction to him. Despite three years and all the upheavals of her life, she still reacted the same way to him like she used to before. Nothing had changed between them. She wondered what he did in the last three years. Did he miss her like she did?

"It's simple chicken curry and rice. I'm sorry, I don't have the ingredients to make anything special for you tonight," she apologized.

"Hey, no formalities with me, please, Aurora. I'll eat anything you make for me," he told her. How could he tell her that even if she gave him poison, he would gladly consume it? After going crazy for the last few years, it was by God's grace that she came back into his life and he was too thankful to have conditions. He loved her so much that just being able to see her again was like a God send blessing for him.

"Do you need help?" He asked in a hoarse whisper, coming closer and standing right behind her, his hot breath on her neck. The wish to pull her into his arms and kiss her like he did the first time was too strong to control.

"No, no, it's done already," she said, nervously. With him so close, she could hardly control her rapidly beating heart. Daxton closed his eyes and breathed in deeply to control himself. He didn't want to scare her with his feelings right now. He wanted her to trust him and open up to him before he made his next move. But most importantly, he wanted to know whether he had any hope of her. He wanted to know about Leo's father. Ever since he had seen her, she was either with Seth or all on her own. There was no sign of Leo's father in her life. He wanted to ask her but was too scared that she would take offense. He couldn't probe into her personal life now. It was too early.

He noticed that she had finished cooking dinnee. "I'll take it to the table," he offered. They carried the food to the table and sat down to eat.

"This is awesome. I must say that you're a very good cook, " said Daxton, appreciating the delicious meal.

"My grandma taught me to cook," she told him. "I was staying with my grandparents in Richmond, "she informed him, seeing his curious look.

"Oh, I must say that she taught you well," said Daxton. He was bursting to know more about her but didn't know how to ask her.

"So how have you been, Daxton?" She asked, casually.

"I've been okay, I guess. I've graduated in Finance and I'm working at Synergies Financial Services," he told her. She smiled appreciatively. "What about you?" He asked her.

"I couldn't complete my final year because of Leo," she told him, a far away look coming into her eyes.

Daxton realized that this was the right time to ask her what exactly happened to her in the last three years to make her drop everything and return to Houston.
