Chapter Three

Officer Brad Williams saw the naughty eighteen year-old stand fearlessly in his own frontyard. His keen eye had checked him staring at his daughter from afar. Any other boy would have dashed inside the house but this boy's undaunted spirit interested him. He parked his car and went inside the house.

"Sapphire, what were you doing at the balcony? I told you to stay away from those boys," he scolded her, gesturing towards the house opposite to them.

"I didn't talk to anyone of them. I was taking a breath of fresh air. I can't stay locked up the whole day because of them?" She asked with surprise.

"I didn't ask you to stay locked up. Just stay away from them," said her dad sternly.

"I am staying away from them, dad. You know what? I hate Houston. You had to choose this house to move into in the whole wide world?" She said in a pissed off tone.

"Sapphire, go to your room. Brad please go and freshen up. Both of you don't start off again please, I'm already exhausted," pleaded her mom.

They went upstairs to their respective rooms to cool down. Both of them were short-tempered people, having similar character traits. Father and daughter were thus alike in many ways, they both loved tennis and both loved barbecued meat. They had similar physical features too, same shade of hair, same eye color. Thus anyone could clearly understand that Sapphire was officer Brad Williams' daughter.

Denver walked towards his house disinterestedly. If he could, he would spend twenty-four hours on his front porch. "Come and help with dinner, Den, " said his ma. All the boys were there in the kitchen helping Vienna while his ma stared with horror at the mess they were making.

"Whoever dirties the kitchen will clean it up later, " she announced and everyone's jaws dropped with horror. It worked. They worked cautiously and there were lesser spills and so lesser mess than before. Denver chopped vegetables for the stew into odd shapes and everyone groaned seeing the butt cheek and d*ck head shapes and every dirty shaped vegetable piece possible.

"Wait till I serve those to dad, " said Vienna and Denver widened his eyes.

"Oh, you wouldn't Vien. Just mash them up in your stew, please? I'll let you play a game on my Playstation for an hour," said Denver. Vienna grinned.

"Sure, bro," she said in a chirpy tone.

The next morning Denver dragged his sleepy butt to the dining table for coffee. His eyes popped out seeing Drake, and Nate wave off Sapphire and enter their house with Timmy and Queen. Apparently they all had gone for a jog in the neighborhood. "Hey bro, Sapphire joined us today, you know. It was real fun," said Drake, trying to make Denver super jealous.

He went green with jealousy. "I'm joining you guys tomorrow, " said Denver with determination.

"Great. Wake up at 5:30 then," said Nate.

"That early? My God, it's impossible!" Said Denver with a groan.

The whole morning whatever Denver did, his attention was fixed to the balcony of the house right in front of them. His family was quite pissed off by him. He ate with his hundred percent attention there rather than his food. Daxton took advantage and dumped the pieces of avocado into his fruit salad. Drake dumped his lettuce from his sandwiches to his plate and the poor guy ate it all up. Obviously he didn't notice a thing with Sapphire walking out of her home, ready to go to school all alone. Interesting! He noted the time that she left for school.

He had an economics evaluation today at college and he hadn't studied a word with his concentration fully on the family who had moved in yesterday. Seeing him lazing around his ma yelled at him. "Denver, get ready for college, isn't it starting in fifteen minutes?"

"I'm not going ma," said Denver.

"Why? What's the occasion?" Asked his ma in a displeased tone.

"Nothing, I didn't study for today's exam, " he told her, looking guilty.

While everyone was away, he wasted his day doing nothing but wait for Sapphire to return home. He noted the timing of her return. The whole time thereafter, he spent in his frontyard, cleaning a very clean car, cleaning the driveway and the garden.

"What's wrong with Denver? Is he punished or what?" Asked a concerned Sean. Denver and cleaning never went together. The only probable reason Sean could think of was that his ma might have asked him to clean as some sort of a punishment.

"No bro, don't you know? He's whipped with the new neighbor. So he spends his time at the frontyard," informed Drake with a laugh.

"Talk some sense into that boy, Sean. He's neglecting his studies. He has missed college today," complained his ma.

"He won't listen to me, ma. Why don't you talk to Stuart? He's coming to the restaurant tomorrow. Den listens only to Stuart, " said Sean.

"Fine then. I'll go to the restaurant tomorrow to talk to Stuart, " said his ma.

Denver was disappointed. Despite all his efforts, he didn't get to see her like he did yesterday. He felt a strange restlessness throughout the day. He wanted to see her, meet her and talk to her, get to know her better but all he ended up doing was clean his entire frontyard just to catch a glimpse of her.  It was evening and he lay down on his bed and stared at the ceiling. What was wrong with him? Why was he wasting his life over a girl? He had no answer to that but he was helpless. His heart directed him to do what he was doing and he had no control over himself whatsoever.

The next day, he woke up early to go for a jog but it seemed that he still was too late for it. He watched Sapphire return to her house, her jogging already done for the day. "Denver, go and jog if you have to or get ready for college," said his ma, already pissed off with him.

"I'm not going ma," he said, sipping coffee and staring outside.

"I'll talk to you about this tonight, Denver, " said his dad, before going to work.

Denver's blood boiled seeing the grinning Callum West walking alongside Sapphire as she went to school. He had to do something about this Callum West. He strode out of the house determinedly, his fists clenched as he muttered curses at him. Daxton saw him from the living room and dashed after him.

"Den no. Don't start a fight in the neighborhood. She's the cop's daughter, dammit," warned Daxton but Denver wasn't listening. He rushed out in a furious mood, ready for  Callum's blood and nothing less. Sean dashed out and he and Daxton tackled him to the ground, refusing to let go. He fumed and yelled and thrashed about but thankfully Callum got away by the time he could set himself free. Sean gave him a lecture but nothing entered his head. He was literally breathing fire. Daxton went to college alone as Daxton wasn't in a mood to go. Sean left for his restaurant where Stuart was supposed to arrive too.

Afterwards their ma too went to the restaurant to talk to Stuart. Finally Stuart came home to put some sense into his brother's head. They found Denver there on the frontyard washing his car.

"Denver, you've washed it four times already. Can you stop?" Yelled his ma.

"You go inside, ma. I'm coming," said Denver, rolling his eyes.

His ma stomped all the way inside the house. "What are you upto Den?" Asked Stuart. Den looked at him and shrugged his shoulders..

"Ma must have told you how worthless I am, didn't she? I can't help it bro. I like her . I just want to see her," an upset Denver told him.

"I don't mind that, but why do you have to bunk your college, dude?" Asked Stuart.

"She goes for a jog, then comes back and gets ready for school. After she leaves, there's very little time for me to get ready. What do I do?" He asked in dismay.

"You wake up early and get half ready. Then when she gets ready, you too shower and get ready. See her off and then goto college," suggested Stuart. Denver nodded.

"If you drop studies, how will you make yourself capable of her?" Advised Stuart.

"Yes bro. I've got it now. I won't bunk college," promised Denver.

"Good. Is it time for her return yet?" He asked Denver.

"No, she returns in another four hours," he answered.

"Then leave the car and let's go inside," Stuart said leading Denver inside the house. His ma grinned seeing the two of them. "Come and have my chicken sandwiches boys," she invited. They talked some more and Stuart promised to move in with his girl, Allison. Denver was happy that his big brother who understood him so much was finally coming back home. His ma was happy too that Stuart had talked to Denver. Maybe he would stop his weird ways now! Only she didn't know that it was just the start!
