Chapter Sixteen
Violet followed them outside to see Leilani and her friends lounging in the living room. The moment she saw Violet, she lashed out,"You, get us something to drink. Just because Lucas is away don't think you can laze around," she said in a sarcastic tone spewing venom at her.
"You get your own drink. Why should I?" Said Violet angrily.
"How dare you talk back?" Said Leilani suddenly springing up and slapping Violet hard.
Walter had gone inside to call Billy, but he wasn't picking up his phone.
"How dare you hit my sister?" Said William, going ahead and stamping Leilani's heel clad foot. She yelped in pain.
"Get out of Lucas's house, you shameless bitch. Take your scoundrels with you," said Leilani as her friends helped her sit down.
"You three get out of here. This is our house. Lucas wants me to stay here and I'm not going anywhere else," said Violet, stubbornly.
Leilani and her friends laughed out loud. "Lucas brought you here? To be what? His whore for a week? See this ring on my finger?" She said, showing a ring on her ring finger. "I'm his fiancée. He will come back to me after he has his fun with you. Did he fu*k you yet?" She asked with a laugh. Her friends too laughed heartily.
"It's not what you think. We both love each other," said Violet.
"Oh, he told you that? He tells that to everyone. One fu*k and all the love will fly out of the window. Believe me. I've known him all my life. He comes back to me everytime. Don't believe me? Ask his mom," she said with a smug expression.
Violet's heart broke. She was confused. His mom knew Leilani? Violet realised that Lucas never introduced her to his family. He never told her much about himself. He never asked her to be his girlfriend or fiancée. He just brought her here and told her he loved her. What did it all mean?
"Lucas asked me to come and live here in his absence and that's what I'll do. You are welcome to continue to work as my maid. If not, get lost from this house. I, as his fiancée will not tolerate lazy workers, " said Leilani.
Violet stood transfixed to the spot. Lucas asked her to stay here? He didn't mention anything yesterday. "I don't believe you. Lucas would have told me that you would be arriving here. You're lying," she said. William went inside to check with Walter.
"You don't believe me?" Laughed all three of them, at her. Leilani produced a piece of paper. "See this? It's a pregnancy report. I'm pregnant with Lucas's baby. Now you know why he wants me to stay here? He doesn't want anything to do with you three anymore. He is too much of a gentleman to tell that to your face. So now pack up and get lost," said Leilani with a victorious smile on her face.
A sob escaped Violet as she realised the truth. Lucas couldn't tell her last night so he left abruptly without even a goodbye kiss. His fiancée was pregnant and he didn't want to play around with poor, available women like herself anymore. She ran inside and picked up her handbag with her necessary stuff. She went to the twins rooms and started packing their stuff. The things that they brought with them.
The twins didn't say a word. They heard everything that Leilani said. They had tried to call Billy fourteen times, yet he didn't pick up his phone. They went out of their rooms and out of the main door quietly. Violet had the money she received from her hotel. She called a cab and all of them trooped inside. The cab sped off when Billy's motorcycle came to a stop in front of the gate. He watched the cab drive away. Who was it that went away in a cab? He decided to go inside and check. Why were there fourteen missed calls from Violet's number?
Violet and the twins reached south LA, to their humble home in W Crest Boulevard. William and Walter helped unload the luggage while Violet paid the cab driver. No one spoke a word about what happened. The twins knew that Violet was too upset to discuss anything. So they left the topic and decided to face the situation bravely.
Violet opened the door to the mess that was strewn all around the apartment. "Let's clean up whatever we can," said Violet. The twins nodded and everyone started cleaning up.
"I'll get some food items to cook. I'll be back soon. Lock the door and clean up as much as you can," she instructed them and they nodded.
"Be careful, Violet, " said William. Violet nodded and left.
Violet went to the nearby shopping centre and bought a few food items. She couldn't splurge with the limited money she had. Without a job, she had to spend stringently.
She tried to block out the words that Leilani told her. She tried to forget everything. She didn't want to cry. She knew all along that it was a dream, that Lucas could never really love her. She brought this heartbreak upon herself. Billionaires never fell in love with their cleaners. It happened only in fairy tales. She dejectedly walked back home.
The harsh reality hit her that she was jobless and too heartbroken to think straight. How would she pull herself together and support her family? She had no idea. Teardrops fell from her eyes as she looked down and walked home as fast as her legs could carry her. She cried for the love that she felt for Lucas. Did he lie to her? Did he not feel anything for her?
Why did he come into her life? She was surviving somehow with two jobs and a roof over her head. Now she saw no way to overcome the state her heart and mind was in. She had lost everything.
If it weren't for the twins, she would have ended her wretched life. She trudged back up the stairs to her apartment.
She opened the door with her keys and saw that the twins had cleared a lot of the trash. She set about cleaning the entire apartment with them.
It was evening by the time they had brought some order to the apartment. Violet made some beef stew and they had it with bread for dinner. The twins went to their room to sleep. Violet cleaned the kitchen and went to her room.
She took a shower and changed into a torn cotton nightsuit. It was the only thing she had. Tears uncontrollably streamed down her cheeks and she broke down into her pillow.
"I don't want to live without you Lucas," she repeated again and again as she broke down helplessly, sobs wracking her small, delicate frame.
